Kronos is a web-based time entry system integrated with HRIS that gathers information on hours worked for all biweekly regular, temporary, and work-study employees. It is also used by exempt staff to record time off.

Northwestern University implemented a new time entry system, Kronos, the fall of 2009 which replaced the former time system known as ETES.  Kronos is currently used by non-exempt employees to enter their time worked. This user group includes temporary and regular biweekly staff employees, as well as their supervisors.

In addition to a time entry system, Kronos also includes modules for exempt staff leave accruals. Exempt employees use this system to track vacation, sick, personal floating holidays, bereavement and jury duty.

Using Kronos enables employees to electronically enter hours worked for the pay period replacing the need for paper time sheets. Supervisors have access to the system for approvals and for generation of reports to help analyze issues such as labor distribution, patterns of time, and absences.

System Requirements

Kronos is certified to work with Java versions 1.6.0_33 through 1.6.0_35, which means it will run properly if you have any of these versions installed on your computer.

Verify installed Java version

If you have a version older than than 1.6.0_33 or newer than 1.6.0_35, Kronos will prompt you to install 1.6.0_33.1

Kellogg Information Systems recommends you always maintain the latest version of Java installed. Since you can have multiple versions of Java installed on your computer, we recommend you maintain the latest version of Java, while also keeping version 1.6.0_33 so Kronos will run appropriately.

Accessing Kronos

Important: If accessing Kronos while off-campus, you must first establish a secure connection to the Northwestern network using VPN.2

Log On:

If you see the following prompt: “This website wants to run the following add-on: ‘Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update’ from ‘Sun Microsystems, Inc.’.  If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here…” select Run add-on.
Once the page is refreshed after the add-on runs, you will be able to log in to Kronos.
