Learn about the computer purchasing and configuration process for Kellogg Faculty.
This article outlines the basic guidelines and process for purchasing computer hardware at Kellogg. Please be sure to see the additional related articles (at right) for additional information.
To ensure the best compatibility with Kellogg's technology environment, Kellogg Information Systems (KIS) recommends Windows-based laptops and desktops. We've partnered with CDWG to offer Lenovo computers, designed and configured for use at Kellogg. These computers—along with printers, monitors, and other accessories—are available at a discounted price for Kellogg constituents.
To review the recommended Lenovo systems; as well as printers, monitors, and other devices; visit the CDW-G Web site (http://www.cdwg.com/fastcats). A more detailed breakdown can be found in this article (requires login with NetID and password. Once you find the equipment you want to purchase, provide the model number(s) to your Department Assistant (DA), who can place the order. Once the order is placed by your DA, please allow 10 business days for delivery. Additional time may be required depending on the item’s availability.
Macs continue to grow in popularity at Kellogg but aren't as seemless as Windows-based computers. Although, you can still use them successfully at Kellogg. If you aren't sure which operating system or computer model will work best for you, or if you want to "test drive" a particular laptop or desktop, please contact KIS to schedule a consultation.
The Purchasing Process
***For Department Assistants (and faculty members) making Kellogg computer purchases through CDWG via the iBuyNU system, please see the related article page***
KIS can create a quote upon request within the CDWG system, which can then be accessed by a purchaser, ensuring the equipment you want to order is accurately submitted. Please contact KIS if you'd like us to create a quote for your CDW-G purchase.
Once you place a purchasing order with your DA, he or she will submit the request to the Dean's Office. From this point until your equipment arrives at Kellogg, your DA is the best and only source for up-to-date information on the status of your order.
By default, Kellogg computer equipment purchases will be shipped to KIS (Jacobs Center, rm #163). KIS will receive hardware, send delivery confirmation, and coordinate configuration for the Kellogg environment.
Configuration and Delivery
After your equipment arrives at Kellogg, if your computer is a Windows computer, KIS will configure it for the Kellogg environment, install requested software, and migrate data from an existing computer. If you ordered a Mac, KIS can help configure it for the Kellogg environment.
KIS can transfer data from your old Windows-based computer to a new Windows-based computer. Data transfers may take 1-2 business days, depending on the amount of data.
On the recommended Lenovo models, KIS will install the following standard software:
- Microsoft Windows Windows 7 Enterprise
- Microsoft Office Professional 2007 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio Professional, and Publisher)
- Symantec Endpoint Protection
- Additional software utilities, including Live Meeting, VLC Media Player, QuickTime, Acrobat Reader, Skype, Firefox, Flash Player, CUTE PDFWriter and others.
KIS does not currently provide a standard software package for the Mac OS; Mac computers will come with the default configuration from Apple. If you desire any of the functionality from Windows applications that are unavailable for Mac, KIS has developed a VMware Windows 7 configuration, which will allow you to run Windows on your Mac.
KIS can work with you to download the VMware Player so you can computing with our standard Windows 7 software "image". This image includes all the software mentioned above.
