This article contains information for Students, Faculty, and Staff at the Kellogg School of Management on how to obtain Stata.

The Kellogg School of Management has standardized on Stata/IC as the statistical analysis software package to be used in the school's MBA degree programs. The school will provide Stata at no cost to the members listed as such in the Eligibility section below. Those identified as not eligible can still obtain Stata through the school's Stata GradPlan for $189 or use Stata in the school's computer labs.


The Stata/IC license is funded by the Dean’s Office teaching budget.  The school will provide the Stata I/C software at no charge to the following members of the Kellogg community:

  • Full-time MBA students (including Joint-Degree programs)
  • Part-time MBA students
  • Executive MBA students
  • LLMK participants
  • MSMS Students
  • Faculty and TA's teaching w/ Stata in the current quarter 

The following are not eligible to receive Stata under this program, including:

  • Visiting scholars
  • Kellogg staff members
  • Doctoral students
  • Research assistants
  • Exchange students
  • IEMBA (International EMBA) students
  • Anyone auditing an MBA course
  • Faculty and TA's not teaching w/ Stata

Obtaining Stata

Note: Those not eligible for Stata/IC under this program may purchase a copy through the school’s Stata GradPlan for $189, get a 6-month license for $69 (also available through the GradPlan),  or use Stata in the school’s computer labs. Through the Stata GradPlan, you may also acquire Stata/SE or Stata/MP, as well as a 2-year license to StatTransfer.

  1. Eligible Windows and Mac users:

    All (except LLMK)Visit the software distribution site (works best with Internet Explorer and Firefox). If you are a faculty member and need Stata for your Unix machine, please contact KIS FaStCATS to request an installation.

    LLMK Participants: Download Windows | Mac and follow the installation instructions listed in the next section  
  2. Click on Start Shopping, enter your NetID and Password and then click on the Stata 13 software title. Follow the on screen prompts.  
  3. The Getting Started with Stata guide as well as the User Guide is available by opening the Stata program and clicking on Help --> PDF Documentation. 

    Note: It is highly recommended that you retain a backup copy of the Stata install file. Please be sure to back up this installation file as you will not be provided a backup copy after you graduate (if you are a student) or leave Kellogg (if you are faculty or staff).

Installation Instructions


  1. Right-click the “” file and Extract All... 
  2. Open the StataIC13_Win folder, and right-click on the ‘SetupStata13_Kellogg.exe’ to begin the installation process.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the software.
  4. The installer will automatically determine the correct version for your computer (32-bit or 64-bit Windows for Stata IC); click Next.
  5. When you are asked to set the Default Working Directory, select the “Use Each User’s Documents Folder” option.
  6. Finish following the on-screen prompts.
  7. After installation is complete, launch “StataIC 13". Stata will automatically prompt you to check for updates.
  8. Select “Check for Updates Now” and update any ado-file, executable, or utility updates that are listed under “Recommendation”.


  1. Double-click on the “” file. This will expand to "StataIC13.dmg" file in the same directory as the zip file.
  2. Double-click on “StataIC13.dmg”.
  3. Copy the Stata program files to the applications folder by dragging and dropping the “Stata” folder icon to “Applications” folder icon. This may take up to a minute, and then Stata installation will complete.
  4. After installation is complete, launch Stata. You will be asked if you are sure you want to open it; click “Open”. Stata will automatically prompt you to check for updates.
  5. Select “Check for Updates Now” and update any ado-file, executable, or utility updates that are listed under “Recommendation”.

The faculty teaching that use Stata in the core statistics class, marketing, and strategy have created menus that conveniently organize the dialog boxes most frequently used in their classes under a single submenu. Please click here to obtain the custom menu.

Re-installing Stata
If your installation becomes corrupt or the software needs to be reinstalled, please follow the steps below to re-install Stata on your computer.

  1. Install the software using the installation file you saved to your computer when you first obtained Stata.
  2. If you do not have this file, you can retrieve the download file from the software distribution site again:
    1. Log on to the software distribution site using your NetID and password (you only have access to this site and the software as long as your NetID/password are active)
    2. Click on Your Account.
    3. In your Order History, you will see the Stata product listed.
      Note: If you do not see Stata listed, you will need to follow the Obtaining Stata process (listed in separate section above).
    4. Click on the Stata product and follow the on-screen links to get to the install file again.

Upgrading the Stata version

If a new version of Stata is available, please following the steps to upgrade:

  1. Follow the instructions in the Obtaining Stata section to download the most recent version of Stata.
  2. Follow the Installation Instructions; you do not need to uninstall the previous version of Stata.
  3. You will need to re-install the Kellogg custom menu. Instructions on how to do so are listed on the Stata support for MBA students page.
