Kellogg Student Email and Microsoft Office 365

SUMMARY

This page provides information on the installation of Office 365 products, as well as student email account configuration for Outlook and mobile devices.

Webmail

To access email over the web, use the Northwestern Outlook Web App (outlook.com/owa/kellogg.northwestern.edu). Log in using your NetID and password. The webmail portal also allows you to use the online version of popular Office applications like Outlook, Word, and Excel without installing them on your computer. Simply click the Office 365 button in the top left corner of the webmail screen. Installing the applications locally is optional.


 

Step-by-Step Instructions

Mac OS X

Outlook 2016
Note: Before attempting to configure your account you must ensure that Outlook is up to date. You can verify this by navigating to the Help Menu and selecting Check for Updates

  1. Click on the Tools Menu and navigate to Accounts
  2. Click the button to Add an Exchange/Office365 account
  3. Enter your full Kellogg email address and NetID password
  4. When prompted for a username, enter YourNetID@ads.northwestern.edu.

If the account does not configure successfully, verify the software is up to date and that your NetID credentials are accurate.

Windows

Outlook 2013/2016

  1. With Outlook open, select the File tab
  2. Under Account Information, choose Add Account
  3. Enter your full name, full Kellogg email address, and your NetID password twice.
  4. Click Finish
  5. You may see a Windows security prompt ask for your password again. Click "Use Another Account" and enter ADS\YourNetID  for the username. Enter your NetID password in the password field.

Mobile

Android

  1. Navigate to your Email Settings
  2. Select Add an Account
  3. Select Exchange
  4. Enter your full Kellogg email address and NetID password
  5. Click Next, and you should be prompted to enter more information.
  6. In the sever field enter outlook.office365.com
  7. All other ports and security options should stay at their default.
  8. Click Next, and you will be prompted to accept Security terms, modify sync settings, and set a display name for your account.
Note: There are many different versions of the Android OS. These steps will work for the majority of devices.

iPhone or iPad running iOS

  1. Navigate to Settings
  2. Select Mail, Contacts, and Calendars
  3. Select Add an Account
  4. Select Exchange as the account type
  5. Enter your full Kellogg email address, your NetID password, and a name to identify the account on your device
  6. If you're prompted to enter server settings, enter the following and tap Next.
    • Email: your full email address.
    • Server: outlook.office365.com.
    • Username: your full email address.
    • Password: email account password.
  7. Finally, select the services you want to sync with your device and tap Save
 

Note: If you think you should have access to a shared mailbox, please contact the club leadership team. They can verify membership or put in a equest with KIS to have you added to the shared mailbox.Most student club mailboxes are part of the Office 365 Environment and can be configured in Outlook or accessed via webmail.

Outlook Configuration (PC and Mac)

To configure a shared mailbox in Outlook for Windows:

  1. With Outlook open, select the File tab
  2. Under Account Information, choose Add Account
  3. Do not fill out any information other than the full email address of the shared mailbox you're configuring
  4. Click Finish
  5. You should see a Windows security prompt asking for a username and password. Enter YOUR full Kellogg Email address and NetID password. Any additional requests for a username/password should use these credentials.
To configure a shared mailbox in Outlook for Mac:
  1. With Outlook open, select the Tools menu
  2. Under Accounts, click the Plus (+) sign and select Exchange
  3. Do not fill out any information other than the full email address of the shared mailbox you're configuring
  4. Click Finish
  5. You should see prompt asking for a username and password. Enter YOUR full Kellogg Email address and NetID password. Any additional requests for a username/password should use these credentials.

Webmail Access

Each mailbox has a unique webmail URL that will follow the example below, replacing "CLUB@KELLOGG.NORTHWESTERN.EDU" with the full club email address:

NOTE: The Office 365 installation is optional. If you have an existing version of Microsoft Office installed, reference the applicable Set Up instructions above for your account configuration.

All Kellogg students have the ability to download and install Microsoft Office (AKA Office 365) for both PC and Mac.This license allows access to the latest versions of Microsoft Office for PC and Mac, including commonly-used programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Current students will be able to download Microsoft Office for Students(AKA Office 365) on up to five computers. Office 365 apps for Android and iPad tablets are also available to students for download through the Google Play store and iTunes.

Q: What is my email storage capacity?
A: The default mailbox size quota for Northwestern Office 365 email accounts is 50GB .

Q: How can I set up email forwarding?

Q: How can I get directly to Outlook Webmail Application (OWA)
A:
You will access your Northwestern Microsoft Office 365 webmail portal at this link. You should bookmark this for your records.

Q: When I log in to webmail, why don't I see any of my folders?
(Inbox, Sent Items, etc.)
A:
When you log in to webmail, by default all of your data is located in a collapsed menu on the left hand side of the screen called "Folders" simply expand this menu and you should see all of your account folders (Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, etc.) and any custom subfolders that you have created.

Q: Can I use StudyBuddy to book group rooms?
A:
Yes. StudyBuddy can be used by using the URL https://www5.kellogg.northwestern.edu/StudyBuddy/. Please save this URL as a bookmark for future use.

Q: How do I know which group rooms are available? 
A. You can view on the calendar when a room is open or busy for each time block. 

Q. I want to try to swap times with a group that is using a specific room. Will I be able to see a description of what the room is being used for on the calendar? 
A.  No. For all Kellogg rooms, you can only see its status (open or busy). You will not be able to view the meeting's subject title or the name of the person who scheduled the meeting. Q: I have a corporate machine, and connect to my company VPN. Will I be able to configure my account using this connection?
A: No. If you have your computer connected to any network that is not the Northwestern network, you will be unable to complete your account configuration. 

Q: I have logged into webmail, but I'm at a page with icons for the Office Applications. How can I actually view my messages?
A: Northwestern's Office 365 offering includes the ability to download local copies of the Office suite to your computer (which KIS does NOT recommend, as we have fully licensed versions of the software here)  or to use the web-based version of these applications. To use the webmail version of Outlook, simply click the Outlook icon under "Collaborate with Office Online"
